François Demachy’s Patchouli Impérial is a tribute to the most animalic of vegetal notes — patchouli. But this isn’t the dusty, bohemian patchouli of the 1970s. Instead, Demachy crafts a contemporary, elegant, and refined interpretation, using Patchouli Oil Light (440) as the central pillar, softened and illuminated by citrus, musks, and woods.

The opening is fresh and vibrant, with Mandarin Oil Green, Citral, and Linalyl Acetate creating a sparkling lift. The heart is woody and floral, with Guaiacwood, Cedrol, and Bacdanol, supported by Methyl Dihydro Jasmonate and Phenylethyl Alcohol for a subtle floral nuance.

The drydown is musky and sensual, dominated by Habanolide, Muscenone Delta, and Ambroxan, creating a clean, skin-like warmth. Labdanum, Ciste Oil, and Camphre add a resinous depth, while Coumarin, Ethyl Vanillin, and Polysantol round out the base with creamy sweetness.

According to Demachy, this patchouli is “almost ambered and animalic, voluptuous and hyper-sophisticated” — a far cry from its earthy origins.
